About Edinburgh City Council Community Recycling Centres

We’re big fans of recycling here at Tuff Van Hire, and we’re even bigger fans of Edinburgh City Councils Recycling Centres, as each week our valued customers make good use of these facilities with the help of our fleet of vans.

Edinburgh City Council has three Community Recycling Centres dotted around Edinburgh; Old Dalkeith Road, Craigmiller. Bankhead Avenue, Sighthill and our favourite Fillyside Road, Seafield. They used to have a facility at Barnton in Edinburgh just off Craig’s Road called Braehead Quarry but they’ve recently closed this.

What Can You Recycle?
Each CRC has what’s called ‘Reuse cabins where items that can be reused such as furniture and working electrical goods can be donated. Local community charities collect these are re distribute or sell them making good use of your unwanted items. All items must be in good working order and are checked for any fire and safety issues so only please pass on suitable items for these charities to collect.

It’s always advisable to separate the items your taking to the CRC as the following items are also recycled by Edinburgh City Council: including bricks, cardboard, energy saving light bulbs, engine oil, car batteries, tyres, fridges, freezers, fluorescent tubes, garden waste, gas bottles, glass, household batteries, large electrical equipment, low grade wood, metal, packaging, paint, paper, small electrical items, solid wood and TVs. Never one to waste anything is Edinburgh City Council!

You can download a free guide to what’s what at Edinburgh City Councils Recycling Centres at their website.

Tuff top tip, if unsure about your items that are needing disposed off, always call the Recycling Centres first to avoid disappointment of not being able to recycle or dispose of your goods – 0131 529 3030

What Happens To Your Waste?
It’s not as simple as just flushing it down a big Edinburgh Council toilet!

Garden waste is shredded and turned into compost which can they be bought back by council residents as a soil improver. The kerbside collection scheme process and recycle glass, tin and paper throughout the city centre. The recycled paper is reused as newsprint. The tin is reused to make new tins or cans, and all glass is melted and reused again to make new glass bottles and jars. Plastics are recycled and used to make various items such as outdoor furniture, fencing, gates, signs and packaging so remember this when checking the prices at B&Q! Textiles are collected, recycled and donated to various charities including the national Blind Children’s Association, The World Cancer Research Fund and Christie Manchester Hospital and Edinburgh City Council have donated over £1million since setting this up.

Opening Times
These vary from summer months to winter months so always check their website for full details before planning your journey, and with the council being the council check what times their staff have their lunch at as frequently Edinburgh’s Community Recycling Centres are closed for an hour mid day due to staff shortages (staff lunches!). Current summer opening times are 8.00am to 7.30pm Monday to Friday, and 8.00am to 6.00pm Saturday & Sunday.
